Meta Goes to Trial Over Alleged Harm to Children on Social Media
The trial began Monday in New Mexico, where Attorney General Raul Torrez claims that Meta’s networks—including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—create environments that endanger children. The lawsuit alleges the platforms expose minors to sexual exploitation, solicitation, and sextortion, sometimes resulting in real-world abuse and human trafficking.
The case stems from a 2023 undercover investigation conducted by Torrez and his office, which asserted that Meta fails to stop child trafficking on its services. Prosecutors are seeking to hold the company accountable for using algorithms that allegedly encourage addictive or harmful content for young users.
Meta has denied the allegations, insisting it has robust safeguards in place to protect minors. The company attempted to dismiss the case, citing protections under free-speech and online immunity laws, but a judge allowed the lawsuit to move forward.
